Prepare Your House for a Quick Sale

In most cases, homeowners have plenty of time to get a house ready to sell as they have been contemplating selling their home for quite some time. But people who work in some professions have to relocate on very short notice and have little time to get a house ready to sell. If you’re getting ready to sell your house and want it to sell as quickly as possible, here are some steps you can take to make the home more attractive to potential buyers:

  1. De-personalize

You want to make it easy for potential buyers to imagine the house as their own so remove family photos, knickknacks, heirlooms, and personal items from sight. You have to pack them anyway so you may as well put them in boxes so they are ready to go.
  2. Get rid of the clutter

A little bit of clutter can make a large room seem much smaller than it really is. People prefer spacious rooms, so get rid of any unnecessary furnishings or accessories in the house.
  3. Organize the closets and kitchen cabinets

You want the potential home buyer to have a positive impression of everything but a room, closet, or cabinet in disarray is a definite turn-off. Clean and organize storage as part of packing things and you’ll have a running start when it’s time to move!
  4. Rent a storage unit

Get rid of excess furniture. Almost everyone has a broken recliner in their basement they can’t seem to get part with, but now that you’re selling the house that recliner and any other extra furniture needs to go! Consider renting a storage unit for a month or two and storing the excess in there as you’re getting ready to sell the house.
  5. Remove fixtures and appliances that you are keeping

This part of getting the house ready to sell reduces clutter, makes it easier for buyers to imagine their appliances in the kitchen and laundry room, and facilitates your move as well.
  6. Make minor repairs

We tend to overlook things that we see everyday such as the broken piece of floor trim in the bathroom, the crack in the plaster over the TV, and the door that won’t stay shut. Although you may overlook these things, potential buyers definitely will not. So make a list of any minor repairs and knock them out as you’re getting ready to sell the house.
  7. Clean the house thoroughly

Giving the house a thorough cleaning is perhaps the single most important part of getting a house ready to sell. Anything dirty or unkempt creates a negative impression that is almost impossible to overcome as people tour the home.

When people walk through a home, their senses are alert. They pick up on everything, either consciously or subconsciously. They can be easily turned off by things that homeowners can’t see or smell because they don’t filter everyday things out like homeowners do. All the steps offered here get the house ready to sell, make moving easier, and significantly enhance your chances of selling the house quickly. If you make a list and knock out the projects in small pieces, it will not seem like an insurmountable task. You can rest assured that your diligence will be well worth the effort!
